Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System This Season.
The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the option to question particular calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
